Viktor Gyökeres has addressed the topic of “player power” following his recent moves and those of his national teammate, Alexander Isak, during the transfer market. Both Swedish forwards starred in significant transfers to Arsenal and Liverpool, respectively, after lengthy negotiations between the clubs involved. The president of Gyökeres’ former club, Sporting, expressed his position before reaching an agreement with Arsenal, stating that he would not accept “blackmail and insults” in the negotiations over their star. Isak joined Liverpool on the last day of the transfer market, after, like Gyökeres, expressing his desire to leave his previous club.

In statements after meeting with the Swedish national team for the upcoming international matches, Gyökeres stated that he had “congratulated” his teammate on his million-dollar transfer to Liverpool. When asked about the “power of the player”, after both forwards pushed for their transfers, the Arsenal player commented that not everyone gets what they want.

I congratulated Isak on the transfer. I don’t really know the exact situation, so it’s difficult for me to talk about it.

Gyökeres continued explaining the dynamics of power in football.

When a player is not wanted at a club, I think it’s the opposite, he has no power, the club can literally do whatever it wants.

When asked about his association with Isak, Gyökeres highlighted Sweden’s aspirations for the World Cup before next year’s tournament.

It’s always good to have good players in the national team. Of course, we want to reach the World Cup next year and if we have the best players available in the team, that will, of course, help.

The Swedish striker added that the connection on the field with Isak is very good.

We played some games together and we feel very good. He has scored, I have scored and we have assisted each other. I think it’s good to continue on that path and improve more with the team.

Sweden begins its qualifying campaign on Friday with a trip to Slovenia before facing Kosovo next Monday. Isak issued a statement on Tuesday in which he said he was “eternally grateful” to Newcastle after completing his transfer to Liverpool. On Instagram, Isak said:

Alexander Isak’s Statement

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff and, above all, to the city of Newcastle and all the incredible fans for the three unforgettable years we shared together. Together, we have made history and taken the club to where it truly belongs. It has been an honor to be part of the journey from qualifying for the Champions League to winning the first trophy in over 70 years. Eternally grateful. Thank you, Newcastle”.
