Rúben Dias Criticizes Refereeing Decision in Manchester City’s Defeat

Manchester City defender Rúben Dias expressed his discontent with the referee’s decision that allowed Newcastle’s winning goal on Saturday, arguing that the referee’s inconsistency made no sense. The match, played at St James’ Park, saw Harvey Barnes score a brace for Newcastle, with the second goal generating controversy. Barnes apparently pushed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during a corner kick before scoring. Donnarumma angrily protested the action to the referee after the goal, but VAR did not intervene to annul it.

“Of all the decisions, only the second goal… I think we need it to make sense,” Dias commented after the match.

The City defender questioned the application of the rules, pointing out the lack of consistency in refereeing decisions. Dias emphasized the importance of establishing a clear rule to avoid confusion and variable interpretation in similar situations. Dias also pointed out that the goalkeeper was in position and was pushed, which, according to him, should have resulted in a foul. He acknowledged that Newcastle were superior and deserved the victory, but insisted on the need to clarify the rules.

“If he complained, it’s because something went wrong,” Guardiola stated. “The same thing happened in Bournemouth. It is what it is.”

With this defeat, Manchester City missed the opportunity to reduce Arsenal’s lead in the Premier League to a single point. Arsenal faced Tottenham on Sunday.
