Cam Little close to breaking NFL record with 70-yard field goal
The Jacksonville Jaguars kicker, Cam Little, was on the verge of making history in American football. During the preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at EverBank Stadium, Little connected on an impressive 70-yard field goal, an attempt that would have broken the NFL record if it had been made in a regular season game. The ball appeared to cross the crossbar with a distance of 3 to 4 yards to spare. Had it counted, it would have surpassed the NFL record of 66 yards set by Justin Tucker against the Detroit Lions on September 26, 2021. According to Elias, there have been eight missed field goal attempts of more than 70 yards in the Super Bowl era. Little celebrated the achievement effusively, with several fists in the air. The carrier Logan Cooke, who had raised his hands in a sign of celebration immediately after the ball left Little’s foot, gave him a shove. Travis Hunter was the first of the players to come out of the band to embrace Little, who was then surrounded by the rest of his teammates. “It was great to see him, wasn’t it?” Jaguars coach Liam Coen expressed. Little, selected in the sixth round from Arkansas, had made 27 of 29 field goal attempts in his rookie season in 2024. He made five of his six attempts from 50 or more yards, including one of 59 yards that tied Josh Scobee’s record as the longest in franchise history. When Coen called a timeout with one second remaining in the first half, he looked at Little to gauge his reaction to the possibility of attempting the 70-yard field goal. There was no hesitation. “Logan and I said, ‘We want to kick it. We want to kick it,'” Little recounted. “When he gave me the opportunity… We went out and the adrenaline is a beautiful thing. But yes, we went out and executed.” Little, who came off the field with the ball, commented approximately half an hour after the game that he still hadn’t seen the ball cross the crossbar. He is 6 feet 1 inch tall and sometimes has trouble seeing over the offensive linemen, but he knew he had a chance. “When Logan’s eyes got really wide, he was going crazy,” Little explained. “I hit him really well, obviously.”“I’m not going to lie, there was probably a little bit of doubt,” Little commented. “But we tried a lot of long field goals in training camp. We had some from 60, probably more than 65 before [in practice]. And, you know, I really wanted to go out there and see what would happen.”
