Thunder Tie the Series with the Spurs in a Match Marked by Injuries
Oklahoma City Thunder achieved an important victory this Wednesday, surpassing the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 122-113. This triumph ties the NBA Western Conference Finals series 1-1, in a match where intensity and injuries were protagonists. The game, which was decided in a highly competitive environment, saw the Thunder react after their defeat in the first game of the series. Now, attention is focused on the next two matchups that will be played in San Antonio, on Friday and Sunday. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led Oklahoma City’s offense with an outstanding performance, accumulating 30 points and nine assists. The Thunder’s defensive strategy, implemented from the start, focused on limiting the impact of Victor Wembanyama, who had had an outstanding performance in the previous game. Isaiah Hartenstein was key in this task, managing to hold Wembanyama to seven points and five rebounds during the first half. However, the victory came at a cost for both teams. Jalen Williams was forced to leave the game in the first quarter due to hamstring discomfort, unable to return. The Spurs also suffered a significant loss, as rookie Dylan Harper suffered a similar injury in the third period, after a fall. The possible absence of Harper worsens the situation for San Antonio, who is already facing the absence of De’Aaron Fox, who is out of action due to a sprained ankle. The match started with an equal score, 31-31 at the end of the first quarter. The Thunder took the lead before halftime, thanks to their intense defense and the Spurs’ mistakes, who accumulated 21 turnovers, which translated into 27 points for Oklahoma City. Despite San Antonio’s comeback attempts in the second half, timely three-pointers from the Thunder kept the Spurs at bay. With 1:25 minutes remaining, the Spurs managed to cut the deficit to five points (118-113), regaining possession after an offensive foul by Gilgeous-Alexander. However, a missed three-pointer by Devin Vassell dashed the visitors’ hopes.
In addition to Gilgeous-Alexander, Alex Caruso contributed 17 points, Chet Holmgren added 13, and Isaiah Hartenstein achieved a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. From San Antonio, Stephon Castle led the scoring with 25 points, although he also committed nine turnovers. Vassell contributed 22 points and Wembanyama finished with 21 points and 17 rebounds. This triumph represents only the second victory for Oklahoma City over the Spurs in the seven matchups this season.
