Fernando Tatis Jr. Confirmed for the 2026 World Baseball Classic
The Dominican Baseball Federation (FEDOM) has officially confirmed Fernando Tatis Jr.’s participation with the national team in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. The tournament will take place from March 5th to 17th at various international venues.
The announcement was reinforced by the player himself, who shared a post from the official account of the Dominican team on his social media, thus confirming his commitment to the tricolor team.
This will be the first time Tatis Jr. participates in the prestigious tournament of selections. The San Diego Padres player, recognized as one of the most outstanding talents in Major League Baseball, arrives at the Classic after a career marked by his power, speed, and defensive excellence.
In his seven seasons in MLB, Tatis Jr. has maintained averages close to 37 home runs and 29 stolen bases per year, which underscores his status as a complete player and positions him as one of the main offensive weapons of the Dominican team.
The native of San Pedro de Macorís has been selected three times All-Star, winner of two Silver Bats and two Platinum Gloves, this last award accrediting him as the best defender in his league. His most outstanding season was in 2021, when he finished third in the National League MVP voting.
The presence of Tatis Jr. also represents a personal vindication, after not being able to participate in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. On multiple occasions, the player has expressed that representing the Dominican Republic is one of the greatest aspirations of his professional career.
A Team with Great Hierarchy
The Dominican selection will be led by Albert Pujols, who takes on this challenge after a successful career as a manager in the Dominican League and the Caribbean Series. The general management will be in charge of Nelson Cruz, and the coaching staff will have a special figure: Fernando Tatis Sr., father of the player, as assistant manager and batting coach.
Dominican Republic will compete in Group D, based at loanDepot Park in Miami, alongside Venezuela, Netherlands, Israel, and Nicaragua, in a group considered one of the most challenging of the tournament.
With a team that is shaping up to be one of the most talented in the competition, the objective of the Dominican team is clear: to return to the top of world baseball and repeat the historic feat of 2013, when they were crowned champions undefeated.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic will also have venues in Houston, Tokyo, and San Juan, and the Dominican Republic starts as one of the big favorites for the title.
