SANTO DOMINGO – The Puerto Plata Mariners defeated the Santo Domingo Lions with a score of 100-93 in an exciting regular season match of the LNB Super League, held this Friday at the San Carlos Club.
This triumph not only represents a victory, but also consolidates the Mariners’ supremacy over the Lions in the particular series, with a score of 2-0. With this result, the Puerto Plata team rises to fifth place in the table, recording a 7-7 record. For their part, the Lions, with a balance of 5-10, are in seventh position, with one game remaining.
The key to the Mariners’ triumph lay in their performance in the final quarter, where they limited the Lions to only 14 points, while they scored 31. The partial scores of the match were 25-30, 29-28, 15-21 and 31-14, demonstrating the Mariners’ superiority at the end of the game.
Anderson García was the standout figure for the Mariners, leading the team in efficiency with 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 11 assists. Emmanuel Omogbo also had an outstanding performance, contributing 21 points. Richard Polanco added 14 points and Andrés Fulgencio contributed 17 units.
For the Leones, Gerardo Suero and Brayan Saviñón were the top scorers, each with 21 points. José Liriano and Kerry Richardson contributed 15 points each, while Ramaine Thomas finished with 12 points.
The match remained close until the last minutes. The Mariners managed to reduce the distance in the first minutes of the last quarter with a 9-3 run, getting within just four points (78-82). Subsequently, they tied the score at 84-84 with a 15-5 partial, and the game continued with an exchange of baskets, tying at 87-87 and 89-89.
Andrés Fulgencio, with a three-pointer with two minutes left, put the Mariners ahead 92-89, securing the victory.
In the first half, the Lions dominated the game, winning the first quarter 30-25. Although the Mariners improved in the second quarter (29-28), the Lions maintained the lead at halftime with a score of 58-54.
Both teams showed good field goal effectiveness. The Lions achieved 61% (20 of 33), while the Mariners recorded 55% (21 of 38). However, the Lions were superior from the three-point line, with a 58% success rate (7 of 12), compared to the Mariners’ 11% (1 of 9).
The Mariners dominated rebounds (19-15) and assists (16-9). Both teams committed seven turnovers.
