Ketel Marte and Willson Contreras: MLB Stars of the Week
Santo Domingo – Major League Baseball recognized Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Willson Contreras of the Boston Red Sox as Players of the Week. Both players dominated the offense in their respective leagues, demonstrating their value on the field.
Ketel Marte was awarded in the National League, thanks to his outstanding performance that boosted Arizona. The second baseman batted .536 between May 18 and 24, with an OPS of 1.563. In addition, he added seven extra-base hits and 12 RBIs in seven games.
Marte’s performance was crucial for the Diamondbacks to achieve a 6-1 record during the week, including an exciting walk-off home run against the San Francisco Giants. After a season start with a .619 OPS in his first 41 games, Marte demonstrated his resilience, returning to his best offensive level.
In the American League, Willson Contreras was recognized for his consistency with the Red Sox. The Venezuelan first baseman batted .458 in six games, with an OPS of 1.355, four extra-base hits, and eight RBIs. Contreras has established himself as a key offensive figure for the Red Sox, maintaining one of the best OPS+ of the season.
This is the second weekly award for Ketel Marte, who had already won it in September 2019. Contreras also added his second recognition, after obtaining the first in 2017 playing with the Chicago Cubs.
In addition, Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner was awarded Play of the Week for a brilliant defensive play.
Hoerner made a spectacular play last Saturday against the Houston Astros, catching a bunt with his hand and completing the out with a throw between his legs to first base. The play quickly went viral among baseball fans.
