Italy Secures First Place in Group B of the 2026 World Baseball Classic

HOUSTON – The Italian baseball team demonstrated its prowess at Daikin Park in Houston, securing first place in Group B of the 2026 World Baseball Classic after a resounding 9-1 victory over Mexico. The game was marked by a historic performance by Vinnie Pasquantino, Italian first baseman, who hit three home runs, becoming the first player to achieve this feat in a single World Baseball Classic game.

With this triumph, Italy completed the group stage with a perfect 4-0 record, leaving Mexico out of the tournament and advancing to the quarterfinals.

In the mound, right-hander Aaron Nola also shone, pitching five solid innings. He allowed four hits and one walk, while striking out five batters, keeping the Mexican offense at bay. Italy took the lead in the second inning with Pasquantino’s first home run against starting pitcher Javier Assad. The lead was extended in the fourth inning thanks to another home run by Jon Berti. The Italian attack continued in the fifth inning, adding three runs that established a score of 5-0. Pasquantino stood out again with two additional home runs in the sixth and eighth chapters, sealing his memorable night. In addition to Italy’s advance, the result also secured the United States’ qualification to the next round, where they will face Canada in the quarterfinals.
