The Dominican Boxing Federation (FEDOBOXA) held an important meeting with the Minister of Sports, Kelvin Cruz, to address crucial issues and seek solutions to strengthen this sport, especially in preparation for the Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026. Rubén García, president of FEDOBOXA, informed that Minister Cruz expressed his commitment to boxing, highlighting its historic trajectory of successes at an international level. The FEDOBOXA commission that attended the meeting included prominent figures such as the immortal of sport Bienvenido Solano, the general secretary Ramón Leonardo, and the journalist Primitivo Cadete. Minister Kelvin Cruz was accompanied by the deputy minister Franklin De la Mota. García also pointed out that Minister Cruz showed willingness to explore solutions to the problems facing Olympic boxing. In this regard, a meeting is planned with the Minister of Housing and Buildings, Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, to discuss the construction and reconstruction of sports facilities for the Central American and Caribbean Games. It is expected that this meeting, which could be held next Monday, will include a visit to the boxing gym of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. In addition, the Minister of Sports will sponsor a meeting with the president of the Organizing Committee of the games, the journalist José Monegro. García affirmed that this attitude of Minister Cruz conveys tranquility to the directors of the Federation, to the athletes and to all the national boxing fans. He recalled that boxing has been key in Dominican sports history, from the first Olympic medal obtained by Pedro Julio Nolasco (bronze in Los Angeles ’84), to the first national anthem sung in an Olympic Games thanks to Félix Díaz (gold in Beijing 2008). Likewise, Joan Guzmán was the first Dominican athlete to win gold at the Pan American Games (Mar del Plata, Argentina, 1995). In the recent edition of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, boxing contributed two of the three medals obtained by the country, with Yunior Alcántara and Cristian Pinales, both bronze medal winners. If there is a sport that deserves the attention of the authorities, it is boxing, due to its successful track record in the different international competitions.
