Barcelona aims for the 2029 Champions League final

FC Barcelona, Barcelona City Council, and the Generalitat de Catalunya have submitted the initial documentation to UEFA to bid for the organization of the 2029 Champions League final. This was announced by the Blaugrana club this Tuesday through a statement.

“FC Barcelona formally expresses its willingness to participate, jointly with the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya, in the initial application process for the organization of the Champions League Final in the year 2029, proposing the city of Barcelona as a possible venue for the event and the Spotify Camp Nou as the proposed stadium,” reads the statement.

This initial process is subject to UEFA approval. The club and the institutions involved have submitted the required documentation for UEFA to assess the feasibility of the bid.

Next steps in the application

The final candidacy will be formalized at the beginning of June 2026, at which time the complete dossier with all the necessary documentation will be submitted. The Barcelona City Council has already approved the presentation of the candidacy and has accepted the ‘Host City Agreement’, showing its willingness to host the event. The Generalitat of Catalonia also supports the candidacy, considering it the best option to host the final. UEFA confirmed last October 31st to have received interest from 15 federations to host the finals of its club competitions in 2028 and 2029, including that of Spotify Camp Nou for the men’s Champions League in 2029. The UEFA Executive Committee will decide on the venues for the eight finals in September 2026. Barcelona’s stadium will compete with Wembley Stadium in London. In addition to the Champions League final in 2029, Barcelona’s stadium, whose remodeling works will be completed before that date, is also considered by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) as a possible venue for the 2030 World Cup final, which will be organized by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
