Crisis in Yemen: UN warns about the increase in violence against civilians
The situation in Yemen has raised international alarms after a worrying increase in hostilities was reported this month. Volker Türk, High Commissioner for Human Rights, denounced that the attacks perpetrated by Houthi rebels have left a tragic toll in areas under government control, in addition to incidents recorded in areas under insurgent rule.
According to data collected by human rights authorities, at least 17 civilians have lost their lives or been injured due to these military actions. Given this situation, Türk has made an urgent call to all parties involved to cease hostilities and prioritize the protection of the civilian population, which is already suffering the ravages of years of conflict and a persistent humanitarian crisis.
Recent attacks and fatalities
- Displaced persons camp in Marib: On August 7, a missile attack on the Jaw al-Naseem camp left six civilians injured.
- Al Mokha Port: On August 9, a drone and missile offensive caused the death of three port workers and left four others injured.
- Cargo ship: An attack recorded on August 11 resulted in the death of four crew members (three Pakistanis and one Indonesian), in addition to several injured.
I call on all parties to de-escalate tensions and avoid inflicting further suffering on the people. Yemenis have already suffered too much from the devastating legacy of years of conflict, displacement and humanitarian crisis.
Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The high commissioner emphasized that it is imperative for the conflicting factions to refrain from any action that could trigger a further escalation, which would plunge the country into a full-scale conflict with devastating consequences for regional stability and the safety of Yemeni citizens.
