Tragedy in Nepal: Death toll from devastating floods rises to 1,295
The nation of Nepal is going through one of the most critical moments in its recent history following the passage of devastating floods that have left a trail of pain and destruction. According to the most recent report issued by local authorities, the death toll has risen to 1,295, while emergency teams continue to work intensely in the search for 4,898 people who remain missing after the natural disaster that occurred on August 26th.
Among the people who have not yet been located, the presence of at least 618 foreign citizens is reported. The magnitude of the catastrophe has severely hit the country’s infrastructure, seriously affecting hydroelectric plants, homes, bridges, and vital communication routes in multiple districts.
A miracle in the midst of disaster
Amidst the desolation, news has restored hope to the rescue teams: two workers from the Trishuli 3A hydroelectric plant were found alive. The men remained trapped for ten days under tons of rubble, mud, and water.
One of those rescued, Kabir Maharjan, is in critical condition due to severe hypothermia and extreme exhaustion, receiving specialized care at a military hospital in Kathmandu. Meanwhile, Sanjay Sah, who is reported to be in stable condition, managed to survive thanks to being able to shout to people nearby during his confinement.
Challenges in victim identification
One of the most complex challenges facing Nepalese authorities is the process of identifying the recovered bodies. Of the 1,295 confirmed deaths, 121 are minors, and so far, 1,263 remain fully unidentified.
- 2,106 genetic profiles have been collected through DNA samples from victims and family members.
- Forensic teams have intensified their efforts to expedite the identification of remains.
- The neighboring region of Tibet, in China, has also suffered the impact of the phenomenon, reporting 21 deaths and 541 missing persons.
