Tragedy in Baní: Young person dies after a catamaran capsizes in Punta Salinas
A recreational outing ended in tragedy last Sunday night at Punta Salinas bay, located in the Peravia province, when a catamaran suffered a dramatic capsizing. The maritime accident claimed the life of Yairi Mateo, a 25-year-old woman who was on board the vessel.
Preliminary reports indicate that the catamaran was carrying a group of approximately ten people, who, according to initial reports, resided in Santo Domingo. Following the incident, the other occupants were rescued and transported to various local health centers to receive medical attention for injuries sustained during the event.
Intervention by the authorities
After the emergency was reported, units of the Dominican Republic Navy, together with members of the Tourist Police (Politur), agents of the Central Investigation Directorate (DICRIM), and representatives of the Public Ministry, arrived at the scene to begin rescue operations and evidence collection.
The authorities have initiated a rigorous investigation process to clarify the exact causes that led to the capsizing of the vessel and to determine if there was any factor of negligence or adverse weather conditions that influenced the incident.
