National Council of the Magistracy advances in the selection of judges for the Supreme Court
The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, will lead a virtual session of the National Council of the Magistracy (CNM) this Thursday with the aim of continuing the selection process for the new judges who will join the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ). The meeting, scheduled for 5:00 p.m., is a key step in the organization’s work schedule to fill existing vacancies in the highest court of the Judiciary.
After the meeting concludes, authorities are expected to provide details regarding the deliberations and decisions made concerning the composition of the high court.
Selection process context
This workday takes place following the recent conclusion of the performance evaluations of the magistrates currently serving on the SCJ. As a result of this institutional exercise, the CNM ratified the following magistrates in their positions for a period of seven years:
- Justiniano Montero Montero
- Fran Euclides Soto Sánchez
- Anselmo Alejandro Bello Ferreras
- Samuel Amaury Arias Arzeno
- Rafael Vásquez Goico
Following this confirmation, the number of vacancies on the Supreme Court of Justice rose to six, positions that must be filled through the evaluation and selection process currently led by the Council.
The selection of the new judges represents one of the most important tasks for the Dominican judicial system, guaranteeing the operability and integrity of the country’s highest court of justice.
Legal framework and transparency
The CNM bases its actions on the provisions established by the Constitution of the Republic, specifically in Article 179, as well as in Law number 138-11 and Regulation 2-25, which dictate the criteria for the evaluation and selection of judges.
