Miraculous rescue in Alaska: teenager survives after shipwreck in the Bering Sea

In a shocking event that occurred in the icy waters of the Bering Sea, near St. Lawrence Island in Alaska, a 15-year-old teenager was found alive after remaining on the hull of his capsized boat. Unfortunately, the other two occupants of the boat did not survive the incident.

The search operation was activated by the United States Coast Guard after the vessel, which had set sail from the community of Savoonga three days earlier, did not return at the scheduled time. The discovery was made on Monday, September 7, thanks to the intervention of an HC-130 Hercules aircraft.

Rescue operation in extreme conditions

The rescue plane located the young man about 6.4 kilometers east of San Lorenzo Island, clinging to the underside of a boat approximately 5.5 meters in length. At the time of being spotted, the minor showed clear symptoms of hypothermia due to the low temperatures in the area.

The aircrew, unable to perform a direct extraction, dropped survival equipment and a raft while coordinating assistance from a nearby vessel to complete the rescue.

The aircraft marked the position with flares before withdrawing to refuel, allowing the fishing vessel Northwest Explorer to reach the exact spot. The fishing vessel’s crew managed to rescue the teenager and recover the bodies of the two deceased adults, subsequently transporting them to the city of Nome.

Incident details

  • Identified victims: Sidney Kulowiyi, 35, and Barton Rookok, 34, both from Savoonga.
  • Adverse conditions: The search was severely hampered by bad weather and poor visibility, which prevented an effective aerial deployment until Monday morning.
  • Ongoing investigation: Local authorities and the Coast Guard are still working to clarify the exact causes of the shipwreck and determine how long the young man remained adrift on the hull.

Although the survivor’s hypothermic state was confirmed, the minor’s identity is being kept confidential by the authorities. So far, no further details have been provided regarding their medical progress or the circumstances that caused the vessel to end up capsized on the high seas.
