Incident at Gonzalo Castillo’s political activity generates rejection within the PLD
The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has formally denounced an act of aggression that occurred during a political meeting led by the organization’s presidential hopeful, Gonzalo Castillo. According to what was reported by the PLD leadership, the activity, which was taking place peacefully, was interrupted by the launching of tear gas canisters.
Leader Andrés Navarro detailed that the event took place at the Wholesalers Club, located on 27 de Febrero Avenue. According to his testimony, individuals identified as anti-riot agents of the National Police threw the devices both in the parking area and inside the main hall where the supporters were gathered.
This is not a coincidence. This is an attack against the freedom of assembly, against peaceful citizens, and against the rule of law.
Gonzalo Castillo’s political team
Due to the magnitude of the incident and to safeguard the physical integrity of those present, the security team proceeded with the emergency evacuation of Gonzalo Castillo and the other party leaders who were accompanying him at the event.
Exhaustive investigation demanded
Faced with this situation, Castillo’s political team has expressed its firm rejection and has issued a series of demands to the competent authorities:
- Conduct an in-depth investigation to identify those responsible for the attack.
- Determine who issued the order to carry out this action against a political activity.
- Ensure that these types of events do not happen again, protecting the constitutional right of assembly in the Dominican Republic.
The political organization emphasized that these types of actions undermine the democratic climate and the fundamental rights of citizens, which is why they expect a clear response from the institutions responsible for maintaining public order.
