The training of future officers of the Dominican Republic Armed Forces represents a significant financial commitment for the State. According to data analyzed by Alofoke Deportes, the cost of preparing a cadet exceeds RD$606,000, considering operating expenses, necessary equipment, and the remuneration they receive during their instruction phase.
Investment breakdown per cadet
The budget allocated to each applicant is divided mainly into two fundamental pillars. On one hand, there is the cost of training and equipment, which reaches an average of RD$244,150. This amount covers essential supplies for military discipline, such as:
- Uniforms of various categories and types.
- Regulation boots, shirts, and kepis.
- Specialized equipment such as command sabers and parade uniforms.
- Living items, including mattresses and other materials necessary during the four-year degree.
On the other hand, there is the salary component. With an initial gross remuneration of RD$30,174.19 per month, the State disburses RD$362,090.28 annually for salaries. By adding both items, the reference figure for a cadet amounts to RD$606,240.28.
A four-year process with budgetary impact
The military career requires a four-year period of intensive preparation, where young people combine university studies with physical and tactical training. As cadets advance in their training, costs increase. For example, in the fourth year, the gross salary amounts to RD$31,338.65 per month, which raises the annual investment to more than RD$620,000 per individual.
If only the base salary is projected over the four years of the academy, the State invests more than RD$1.4 million per cadet, a figure that increases considerably when integrating logistical and specialized instruction costs.
Student population in the academies
Currently, a total of 634 young people are pursuing their studies at the country’s military institutions. The distribution of the cadets and midshipmen is detailed as follows:
- Dominican Republic Army: 271 young people (230 men and 41 women).
- Dominican Republic Air Force: 203 young people (160 men and 43 women).
- Dominican Republic Navy: 160 midshipmen (131 men and 29 women).
Beyond the direct figures
It is important to note that the RD$606,240.28 represents only an estimate based on direct expenses. The actual investment assumed by the State is, in practice, higher, since the operation of the academies involves constant operating costs, such as facility maintenance, utilities, transportation, food, sports infrastructure, and the payroll of teachers and military instructors in charge of training future officers.
