Roberto Ángel Salcedo inaugurates Este Festival 2026 in Higüey
The Minister of Culture, Roberto Ángel Salcedo, formally kicked off the 2026 edition of Este Festival, an event taking place from August 28 to 30 at the facilities of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Higüey campus. This initiative’s main objective is to exalt the identity, art, and traditions that define the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic.
During his inaugural speech, Salcedo emphasized that this space is fundamental for the cultural decentralization of the country, allowing the heritage of local communities to be valued and projected at a national level.
This festival is an essential platform to make our most authentic expressions visible and to strengthen the bonds between culture and the territory that defines us as a nation.

Regional recognition and programming
Within the framework of the opening, the official was distinguished with the Coat of Arms of the Villa Salvaleón de Higüey, a recognition granted by the municipal authorities in gratitude for his management and work in favor of strengthening Dominican culture.
The event’s agenda, which pays special tribute to the renowned artisan Genaro Reyes, popularly known as “Cayuco”, includes a varied cultural offering that represents the six provinces of the region:
- La Altagracia
- San Pedro de Macorís
- La Romana
- El Seibo
- Hato Mayor
- Monte Plata
The opening day featured an artistic performance by the Sueño Musical Children’s Choir and the presentation of an audiovisual piece detailing the scheduled activities. Over these three days, attendees will be able to enjoy a comprehensive exhibition that includes live artistic performances and a showcase of the rich gastronomic diversity that characterizes this area of the country.
