Residente begins filming “Porto Rico” in the Dominican Republic alongside Bad Bunny
Cinema and music intertwine on Dominican soil. René Pérez Joglar, known worldwide as Residente, has officially begun filming his debut feature film in fiction cinema, titled “Porto Rico.” This ambitious feature film features the stellar participation of Bad Bunny, who takes on his first leading role on the big screen under the direction of the Puerto Rican artist.
The production has generated great expectations by integrating a luxury cast composed of international stars such as Javier Bardem, Viggo Mortensen, and Edward Norton. Residente shared his enthusiasm through his digital platforms, describing this project as one of the most significant creative challenges of his entire professional career.
A Caribbean western with a historical focus
Defined by its creators as a “Caribbean western,” the film is inspired by true events to explore the complexities of Puerto Rico’s colonial past. The screenplay, a key piece in this narrative, was developed by Residente in collaboration with Alexander Dinelaris, a renowned writer awarded an Oscar for his work on “Birdman.”
Regarding the choice of the title, the director has pointed out that the modification in the island’s name is not accidental; it seeks to be a narrative tool to delve into themes of identity, control, and the legacy of colonization.

Although the production team initially intended to film in Puerto Rico, various logistical conditions prevented the project from being carried out in that territory.
