The Queens of the Caribbean fall to Canada and postpone their qualification for Los Angeles 2028
In a bittersweet day for Dominican volleyball, the women’s national team, known as the Queens of the Caribbean, suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Canadian squad. This result in the decisive duel for the NORCECA ticket complicates the direct path to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, forcing the tricolor team to recalibrate its strategy for future competitions.
The match, which was decided in four sets, showed a solid Canadian team that sealed its Olympic qualification with authority. The final set, with a resounding score of 25-13, ended the Dominican aspirations in this encounter, allowing Canada to return to the world’s premier sporting event since its last appearance in Rio 2016.
What is the outlook for the Queens of the Caribbean?
Despite this setback, the Dominican Republic’s Olympic dream remains intact. The FIVB qualification system for Los Angeles 2028 offers various alternatives to secure a spot among the 12 nations that will compete for gold. Currently, the process includes spots for the host country (United States), continental championships, the 2027 World Championship, and the 2028 world ranking.
The Dominican women have already secured their spot in the 2027 Women’s World Cup, following their outstanding performance in the 2026 NORCECA Continental Championship. This world event now becomes the main stage to seek direct qualification.
Paths to Olympic qualification
- 2027 World Championship: The Caribbean Queens must position themselves among the top three teams that do not yet have their Olympic ticket to secure their spot in Los Angeles.
- 2028 FIVB World Ranking: In case of not achieving it in the World Championship, the last opportunity will arrive in June 2028. Three additional spots will be awarded to the best-ranked teams in the world ranking that have not yet qualified, prioritizing continental representation.
Although the defeat against Canada is a hard blow to our immediate aspirations, the team maintains its determination. We have the necessary tools and experience to secure our place in the 2027 World Cup and, if necessary, climb the world rankings towards 2028.
