The Queens of the Caribbean begin the defense of their crown at the 2026 NORCECA
The women’s national volleyball team, the Queens of the Caribbean, begins its participation this Friday in the 2026 NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship. The event, which is hosted at the Prof. Ricardo Gioriber Arias Volleyball Palace in Santo Domingo, represents the start of a crucial cycle for the tricolor team, which seeks to defend its title and begin its path toward the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games with a firm step.
The Dominican team’s debut is scheduled for 8:30 at night against Costa Rica. This match marks the start of the preliminary phase for the local team, which has been placed in Group B, completed by the national teams of Puerto Rico and Cuba.
Tournament format and objectives
The tournament features the participation of eight of the most prominent powers from the Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean. The groups have been distributed as follows:
- Group A: United States, Canada, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago.
- Group B: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Costa Rica.
The championship dynamics establish that the leaders of each group will earn a direct pass to the semifinals. Meanwhile, the teams that place in second and third place must face each other in a quarterfinal round to keep their aspirations for the podium alive.
Beyond the fight for the regional title, the tournament is fundamental for the immediate future of women’s volleyball. Three spots for the 2027 FIVB World Championship are at stake, and the qualifying path to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is being established.
Regarding the Olympic process, the four best teams in the tournament —excluding the United States due to their status as hosts of the next Olympics— will advance to a final continental qualifier, scheduled for August 28 and 29, where a direct ticket to the Olympic Games will be at stake.
Action on the opening day
The competition opened its doors this Friday with a display of power by the United States, who overcame Trinidad and Tobago with a resounding 3-0, recording partials of 25-6, 25-11, and 25-4.
With the unconditional support of the Dominican fans, the Queens of the Caribbean take the court with the firm purpose of asserting their hierarchy and beginning their championship defense with a solid victory against the Costa Rican team.
