The Queens of the Caribbean begin the defense of their crown at the NORCECA Continental Championship
The Queens of the Caribbean are ready for a new international challenge. This Friday, the Dominican Republic women’s national volleyball team begins its participation in the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship with the clear goal of retaining the title won in the last three editions of the tournament.
The Dominican team’s debut will be against Costa Rica, at 8:30 p.m., at the Ricardo Gioriber Arias Volleyball Palace, located at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. The local players arrive at this match in stellar form, having won their seventh consecutive title at the recent Central American and Caribbean Games just a few weeks ago.
A key path to Los Angeles 2028
Beyond continental glory, the tournament represents a fundamental step in the Dominican Republic’s aspirations to secure its fifth qualification for an Olympic Games. The event is decisive for the cycle heading towards Los Angeles 2028, as the top four teams, excluding the United States due to its status as host, will advance to the Continental Qualifier to be held at the end of August at the same venue.
The Dominican national team seeks to consolidate its dominance in the area and take advantage of playing at home to continue adding vital points in the world ranking and the Olympic qualifying process.
Tournament details and competition format
The NORCECA Continental Championship features the participation of eight nations: the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, and the host, the Dominican Republic. In addition to competing for the trophy, the tournament will award three spots for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship.
The preliminary phase will take place from August 21 to 23. The teams have been divided as follows:
- Group A: United States, Canada, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago.
- Group B: Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Costa Rica.
The winners of each group will earn a direct pass to the semifinals, while the second and third place teams will have to face each other in the quarterfinals, scheduled for August 24. The grand final of the tournament is set for August 26.
Opening day schedule
The action begins this Wednesday with a day full of high-level volleyball:
- 1:00 p.m. — United States vs. Trinidad and Tobago
- 3:30 p.m. — Canada vs. Mexico
- 6:00 p.m. — Puerto Rico vs. Cuba
- 8:30 p.m. — Dominican Republic vs. Costa Rica
The Dominican Republic holds four titles in the history of this championship (2009, 2019, 2021, and 2023) and trusts in the support of its fans to extend its legacy and remain in the elite of world volleyball.
