PedidosYa delivery workers report insecurity and violence on the streets of Santo Domingo
Citizen insecurity has become a critical concern for PedidosYa delivery workers in the Dominican capital. Faced with an increase in assaults and violent incidents, this labor group has raised its voice to demand urgent measures to guarantee their physical integrity while they carry out their daily shifts.
Eric Frías, one of the affected delivery workers, shared a heartbreaking testimony about the reality they face on the roads. According to Frías, a colleague lost his life last Monday night on Independencia Avenue, a victim of an attempted robbery of his motorcycle, an event that has sounded the alarm throughout the entire guild.
Demands on authorities and calls for caution
The delivery sector has requested that national authorities increase police presence in areas of the city identified as red zones, especially during nighttime hours. Despite the constant control operations to which they are subjected, workers believe that preventive patrolling is insufficient in the places where they are truly at risk.
We ask platform users, for safety reasons, to come down to receive their orders in areas considered dangerous, as delivery personnel remain exposed while waiting for customers.
In addition to insecurity, delivery workers pointed out other critical points that affect their performance:
- Need for increased police surveillance in high-risk sectors.
- Request for customer collaboration to pick up orders in vulnerable areas.
- Dissatisfaction with the platform’s management regarding long wait times.
- Lack of effective responses from the company to workers’ complaints.
The delivery community reaffirms its commitment to the service, but insists that current conditions are unsustainable without effective intervention that protects those who travel throughout the geography of Santo Domingo to bring sustenance to their homes.
