Puerto Rico secures its spot in the pre-Olympic qualifier after defeating Mexico

In an exciting duel that kept spectators on the edge of their seats at the Ricardo -Gioriber- Arias Volleyball Palace, the Puerto Rican national team achieved a key three-sets-to-two victory over Mexico. With set scores of 26-16, 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, and 15-11, the Puerto Ricans secured the last available ticket for the upcoming pre-Olympic qualifier.

Thanks to this result, the Puerto Rican team positioned itself in fifth place in the NORCECA Continental tournament, while the Mexican team finished its participation in sixth position.

Offensive dominance and comeback

Puerto Rico’s offense was led by an unstoppable Decelise Champion, who recorded an impressive 34 points, supported by Paola Santiago with 11 points. On the Mexico side, Sofia Maldonado stood out with 21 units, followed by Grecia Castro, who contributed 17 points.

The match began with clear dominance by the Puerto Ricans, who took the first set thanks to a solid defense and a forceful offense that dismantled the Mexican scheme. However, the landscape changed starting from the second set, where the Mexicans adjusted their game to put their rivals in trouble and take the lead on the scoreboard.

Puerto Rico managed to regain its rhythm in the fourth set led by Champion, Rivera, and Santiago, thus forcing a fifth and decisive set that would define the fate of both teams.

A high-voltage closing

In the final set, Puerto Rico took an early 10-5 lead, fueled by the power in the spikes of their main stars. Although Mexico attempted a final comeback, closing the gap to 14-10 through the efforts of Maldonado and Castro, defensive errors in the final points prevented them from mounting a comeback, thus sealing the victory for the Puerto Rico team.
