Health and dental tourism: A development engine for the Dominican Republic
Medical and dental tourism is emerging as a strategic pillar for the Dominican Republic, offering a key pathway to attract foreign investment, modernize the healthcare system, and foster the creation of highly specialized jobs. During the XXVI National and International Congress of Dentistry (CONAOD XXVI), industry experts analyzed how excellence in services and collaboration between the public and private sectors are fundamental to consolidating the country as an international benchmark.
The panel dedicated to Health Tourism featured the participation of key figures such as Virginia Laureano, president of the Dominican College of Dentists; Alejandro Cambiaso, president of the Dominican Association of Health Tourism (ADTS); Amelia Reyes Mora, vice president of the ADTS; and Gerardo Mesa, representing the Ministry of Public Health. The specialists agreed that the growth of this sector not only benefits foreign patients, but also raises the standards of care for the entire local population.
Quality, accreditation and trust
To position the Dominican Republic as a safe destination, regulatory compliance is non-negotiable. The panelists emphasized that dental centers must go beyond the basic authorization required by the Ministry of Public Health, actively seeking international certifications and accreditations that guarantee patient safety.
The adoption of standards such as NORDOM ISO 22525:2020 is fundamental to strengthening the quality of international care and generating the necessary trust in patients seeking health services outside their borders.
Key strategies for success
- Comprehensive patient management: The creation of international departments is essential to manage the user experience from before their arrival in the country, including pre-evaluation and post-treatment follow-up.
- Continuous training: Staff must possess skills in bilingualism, intercultural communication, and clinical protocols based on scientific evidence.
- Compliance culture: Given new legal challenges, such as those contemplated in the new Penal Code, it is vital to reinforce prevention and professional and institutional responsibility.
- Economic synergy: Health tourism acts as a catalyst for other complementary sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and logistics services.
Within the framework of the centenary of the Dominican College of Dentists, this analysis reaffirms the guild’s commitment to transforming international demand into an opportunity for sustainable development. The ultimate goal is clear: to turn investment in infrastructure and technology into a lasting legacy, benefiting both visitors and Dominican citizens who access world-class health services.
