Pope Leo XIV advocates for the comprehensive protection of migrant minors
In the framework of the upcoming World Day of Migrants and Refugees, Pope Leo XIV has issued a strong call to public and private institutions. The pontiff emphasized that the absolute priority must be to safeguard the dignity and well-being of children and adolescents in situations of mobility, urging the avoidance of traumatic practices such as family separation and forced repatriation.
The message underscores the need for a profound transformation in how the global migration crisis is addressed. According to Leo XIV, it is vital to stop focusing the debate solely on the management of migratory flows and instead focus on the unrestricted protection of human rights, through a solidary and coordinated response that facilitates real integration.
A change of perspective is urgent: the axis of the debate must be shifted from the mere management of migratory flows to the full and immediate protection of human rights, adopting a coordinated, solidary, and effective response.

Vulnerability and risks on migration routes
The Pope highlighted that minors represent the most fragile link within the current migratory landscape. Many of these children have witnessed episodes of extreme violence, have lost their loved ones, or live in constant anguish due to prolonged separation from their families. The pontiff denounced that, in many cases, the dignity of these minors is seriously violated through situations such as:
- Tragic deaths along migration routes.
- Labor exploitation and human trafficking.
- Forced recruitment for armed conflicts.
- Sexual violence and forced marriages.
A call to global action
Leo XIV was emphatic in pointing out that this phenomenon should not be reduced to simple figures or statistics, but treated as an imperative of humanity. The solution, in his view, requires a comprehensive approach that ranges from the root of the problem in the countries of origin —eliminating the causes that force flight— to the guarantee of a dignified reception in the nations of transit and destination.
Finally, the religious leader called on the various communities and representatives of different faiths to foster spaces for encounter. The goal is to prevent isolation and radicalization, promoting instead a culture of mutual respect, education, and friendship that allows young migrants to fully develop in their new communities.
