The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, will not be present at the reception hosted by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in the framework of the start of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The decision has generated various reactions, although the Spanish Executive has clarified that the absence is strictly due to previously established agenda commitments.
Scheduling and logistical reasons
Government spokesperson Elma Saiz detailed from Madrid that the invitation extended by the U.S. president reached Sánchez’s office when the official trip itinerary was already fully structured. As Saiz explained, a trip of this magnitude requires exhaustive planning well in advance, which makes it impossible to make last-minute changes to attend social events.
Those readings are absurd, if not devious.
