Omar Fernández questions the Dominican Republic’s educational results in PISA tests
The senator for the National District, Omar Fernández, has expressed his deep concern regarding the recent results obtained by the Dominican Republic in the 2025 PISA tests. The report, issued by the OECD, once again positions the country at the lowest levels of academic performance within the Latin American region, a situation that the legislator describes as an unacceptable stagnation.
For Fernández, the gap between the resources allocated to the education sector and the results obtained is evident. The senator emphasizes that official rhetoric and budgetary allocation are not enough if the quality of learning in Dominican classrooms is not transformed.
The results of the PISA tests should concern us all. Because behind every speech, so many plans, and so many resources dedicated to education, there is a reality that we cannot sugarcoat, and that is that the Dominican Republic remains stagnant at educational levels that are simply unacceptable.

Investment or resource management?
The legislator raised a necessary debate regarding the educational management model. In his view, the country must stop focusing solely on the volume of investment to focus on the efficiency and strategy of applying said funds. As a point of comparison, Fernández mentioned the case of El Salvador, a nation that, despite having lower economic indicators compared to productive Dominican regions like the Cibao, has managed to surpass the country in fundamental areas such as mathematics, reading, and science.
