Guatemala strengthens its security with the graduation of more than 3,000 new police officers
In a strategic effort to strengthen surveillance and combat criminality, Guatemala officially incorporated 3,098 new officers into the National Civil Police (PNC) this Wednesday. This reinforcement seeks to improve police coverage rates in the most vulnerable areas and strengthen crime prevention efforts throughout the national territory.
A step towards the national security goal
With this new promotion, the country reaches a rate of approximately 254 agents per 100,000 inhabitants. Although this number represents a significant advance, the authorities acknowledge that it is still below the Latin American average, which exceeds 310 officers per 100,000 people. The current government’s goal is to strengthen the public force to face the security challenges that affect its 18.3 million inhabitants.
The deployment of the new personnel has clear objectives, as detailed by President Bernardo Arévalo de León:
- Reinforce security in the highlands, eastern regions, and border areas.
- Counteract criminal structures operating in areas historically affected by corruption and impunity.
- Maintain state control against the influence of organized crime.
The new agents will go to serve the communities of the highlands, the east, and the borders, where corruption and impunity opened doors to organized crime.

Context of the fight against violence
The strengthening of the PNC comes at a key moment. While the country has managed to significantly reduce its homicide rate compared to nearly two decades ago—going from 45 violent deaths per 100,000 inhabitants to 16.5 today—the nation faced critical challenges at the beginning of 2026. Following a series of prison riots and coordinated gang attacks, the Executive branch implemented exceptional measures, such as states of siege and prevention, to restore order and public security.
Since the beginning of the current administration, the Government has graduated 9,316 new police officers. This figure represents a 77.6% progress toward the projected goal of 12,000 personnel, bringing the active police force to a total of 46,500 members dedicated to the protection of the country.
