Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan’s philanthropic commitment to the global future

Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Meta, together with his wife Priscilla Chan, have consolidated a transformative vision through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). This philanthropic project, which was born with the purpose of enhancing human potential and promoting equality, focuses on fundamental pillars such as advanced science, cutting-edge technology, and medical research with the ultimate goal of preventing or eradicating complex diseases.

The couple’s financial commitment is of historic magnitude, having pledged to allocate 99% of their Facebook shares, valued at their inception a decade ago at approximately 45 billion dollars, to fund this mission throughout their lives.

We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talent of those already working on these issues. But we want to do what is within our reach, collaborating with many others.

A long-range strategy

The initiative does not seek immediate results, but rather proposes time horizons of 25, 50, and even 100 years. According to the founders, humanity’s great challenges require sustained planning and a structure that integrates various key factors:

  • Technological development: Boost productivity through constant innovation.
  • Public participation: Engage in public policy debate so that progress is supported by social movements.
  • Strategic collaboration: Support independent leaders and experts in each field, recognizing that working together is more efficient.
  • Learning culture: Take calculated risks, accepting that the path of learning involves constant adjustments.

Tangible impact on communities

The work of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is already a palpable reality in various sectors. Recently, the organization has channeled significant resources toward medical and educational needs:

  • Medical technology: $1.48 million was allocated to Wilcox Medical Center in Līhuʻe for the acquisition of mobile MRI units and 3D mammography equipment, improving access to high-precision diagnostics.
  • Educational and family support: Through an investment of over $10 million, CZI promotes integrated services in East Palo Alto and Belle Haven, benefiting students and families through The Primary School model.
  • Promotion of educational savings: The initiative has allocated $3.6 million to 550 educational savings accounts, designed so that families can face future academic costs with greater tax advantages.

Zuckerberg has emphasized that, although he will maintain his role as CEO of Meta for the coming years, his personal priority and that of his wife is to dedicate their lives to solving these social challenges, inspired primarily by the well-being of their daughter, Maxima Chan Zuckerberg.
