Mariana Tavárez de Santos assumes the general management of MERCADOM

The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, has formalized the appointment of Mariana Tavárez de Santos as the new General Director of Dominican Agricultural Supply Markets (MERCADOM). The designation was made official through Decree 552-26, marking an important step in the entity’s administrative structure.

Trajectory and experience in the institution

Tavárez de Santos is no stranger to the institution, as she has a solid track record within the organization. Her connection with MERCADOM dates back to September 2020, when she was appointed deputy director through Decree 392-20. Since then, she has been closely involved in the strategic projects and daily operations of the state entity.

It should be noted that the new director is already familiar with the responsibilities of the high-level position, having held the general administration on an interim basis during 2021. During that period, she led various projects focused on operational efficiency and the strengthening of inter-institutional relations.

His interim management was characterized by the search for strategic alliances, highlighting his efforts to facilitate public services within the Merca Santo Domingo premises and his direct approach with national producers to optimize agricultural commercialization.

Commitment to the agricultural sector

During her previous tenure in the administration, Tavárez de Santos remained active in the field, visiting production areas such as Cevicos to address the needs of pineapple producers. These actions reflect her focus on reducing the intermediation chain and improving distribution channels for Dominican agricultural products.

About MERCADOM

MERCADOM is an autonomous and decentralized agency, attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, whose legal framework is defined by Law 108-13. Its main functions include:

  • Design and execute development policies for the National Food Network (RENA).
  • Coordinate the efficient operation of wholesale markets, retail markets, and regional slaughterhouses.
  • Promote mechanisms that facilitate the fair commercialization of agricultural products.
  • Foster the sustainability of the national agri-food sector.

With this promotion, Mariana Tavárez de Santos moves from holding a second-level position to leading the future of MERCADOM, with the goal of continuing to drive the modernization and development of agricultural marketing infrastructure in the country.
