Guatemala seals its spot in the Nations League quarterfinals with an agonizing victory

The Guatemala national team achieved a dramatic and vital victory this Monday by defeating Suriname 1-0. With this result, the team led by Mexican strategist Luis Fernando Tena secured their qualification for the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League, keeping their aspirations in the regional tournament alive.

The match, played at El Trébol stadium in Guatemala City, was decided in the final moments thanks to a powerful long-range left-footed strike executed by Matthew Evans. The midfielder, who plays for Wacker Innsbruck in Austrian football, became the hero of the day by breaking the tie in stoppage time.

A match marked by tension and controversy

The development of the match changed drastically in the 62nd minute, when Surinamese player Richonell Margaret was sent off the pitch. The red card was the result of an altercation with local fans, an incident that caused a prolonged interruption of the match due to allegations of racist insults from the stands.

Numerical superiority allowed Guatemala to dominate the final stretch of the match, although Suriname’s defensive resistance complicated the path to the goal until Evans’s providential appearance.

In the final moments, Suriname goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen attempted to level the score by joining the attack for a corner kick. However, his Guatemalan counterpart, Nicholas Hagen, shone with a spectacular save that preserved the lead and secured the three points for the hosts.

Situation in Group B

  • Guatemala reached seven points, securing at least second place in the group on goal difference.
  • Suriname, also with seven points, awaits the outcome between Jamaica and Honduras to define its future in the competition.
  • The tournament grants direct tickets to the 2027 Gold Cup, which is the main objective of the participating national teams.

With this victory, Guatemala joins the knockout stage alongside national teams such as Panama, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, who had already secured their spot thanks to their position in the Concacaf regional ranking.
