Tragedy in Santiago: Voracious fire leaves five families homeless in Villa Esperanza

Residents of the Villa Esperanza sector in Santiago experienced a night of anguish and despair after a devastating fire reduced five homes to ashes. The incident, which occurred after 11:00 p.m. last Friday, left several families homeless after they lost all of their belongings.

The structures, built with a combination of zinc, wood, and concrete blocks, were consumed with alarming speed, preventing those affected from rescuing appliances, documents, furniture, or clothing. Despite the rapid intervention of the Fire Department, the intensity of the flames was uncontrollable, leaving a devastating scene in the area located behind La Esperanza school.

Survival stories

Yaneli Veras, a final-year medical student, recounted the moments of terror she experienced along with her young daughter. “We had time to get out. Thank God nothing happened to us, but everything burned down there. We were left with nothing,” she expressed with deep sorrow over the loss of her belongings.

When I arrived, the fire had taken hold everywhere. It was too fast. Thank God nothing happened to my dad or my grandfather, who is an elderly person.

For his part, Pedro Manuel Veras, a captain in the Dominican Republic Air Force, lamented the total loss of property after returning from his workday. In addition to material goods, the fire claimed the lives of domestic animals that were part of the residents’ livelihood.

Call for solidarity

Faced with the difficult situation, the victims have made an urgent appeal to government authorities and civil society for support, as they currently lack shelter and the basic resources to begin rebuilding their lives.

Although investigations to determine the exact causes of the fire are still ongoing, the residents are grateful to have survived the event, describing it as a miracle within the tragedy that today forces them to start from scratch.
