Fatal victims identified after tragic accident on the Santo Domingo Malecón

The authorities have confirmed the identity of the two people who lost their lives this Monday following the devastating traffic accident that occurred on George Washington Avenue, near the Adrián Tropical restaurant in the National District. The deceased have been identified as Luis Alejandro Torres Mejía, 35, and María Altagracia Méndez de Olivo, 53.

The Chief of the National District Fire Department, José Frómeta Herasme, detailed that Torres Mejía was the driver of the tanker truck involved in the accident, while Méndez de Olivo was traveling in an SUV at the time of the impact.

Event details

The accident, which also involved a car and a motorcycle, was recorded at approximately 6:58 in the morning. The truck was carrying an estimated load of 10,000 gallons of fuel, which spilled after the collision, triggering a powerful explosion and a large-scale fire.

To contain the situation, emergency teams used special foam, given that the spilled fuel was diesel, thus managing to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent areas.

Response from the authorities

  • Deployment of 12 units from the National District Fire Department to extinguish the fire.
  • Active participation of agents from the National Police and the General Directorate of Traffic and Land Transportation Safety (Digesett).
  • Collaboration of the Specialized Fuel Control Corps (Ceccom) in the disaster area.

The exact causes that led to the accident and the subsequent explosion of the tanker truck remain under investigation by the competent authorities.

The accident caused heavy traffic congestion throughout the Malecón area, as well as dense smoke that was visible from different parts of the capital. Alofoke Deportes will continue to follow up on official reports regarding this unfortunate event.
