Humanitarian crisis in Indonesia: Earthquake on Flores Island leaves 68 dead and thousands displaced

The island of Flores, located in the east of the Indonesian archipelago, is going through a critical situation following the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck its coasts last Saturday. According to official reports, the earthquake has left a regrettable toll of 68 people dead and more than 200 injured, triggering a humanitarian emergency of great proportions.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency has confirmed that nearly 10,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. Currently, these citizens are taking refuge in makeshift shelters, while others have chosen to spend the night in front of the remains of their homes in the most affected areas of the East Nusa Tenggara province.

Persistent seismic activity and structural damage

The region has failed to regain calm, as nearly a thousand aftershocks have been recorded since the main event. This Monday, a new 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook the area again, creating further uncertainty among the island’s two million inhabitants, although fortunately, a tsunami alert was not triggered.

  • 914 homes were practically destroyed.
  • 93 schools suffered damage of varying degrees.
  • 36 health centers were affected, complicating care for the injured.
  • Numerous roads show damage, which hinders access to the most remote areas.

Government response and vulnerability situation

Given the magnitude of the tragedy, the provincial government has declared a state of emergency for a period of 14 days. This measure seeks to streamline coordination between local and central authorities to channel the necessary assistance efficiently.

The population is distressed and deeply fearful. Children and the elderly are the most vulnerable groups at this moment, facing security risks after losing their homes, their educational centers, and the stability of their families.

It is estimated that more than 8,000 children are in a situation of high vulnerability. Humanitarian organizations have urged the authorities to implement a comprehensive aid scheme that not only prioritizes food and shelter, but also medical care and emotional support for those affected.

International solidarity

Although the Indonesian government has not yet formally requested international assistance, countries such as China have expressed their willingness to collaborate in relief efforts. Likewise, various global figures and leaders have sent messages of solidarity to the Indonesian people, encouraging emergency teams to continue their tireless rescue and recovery efforts in one of the most seismically active zones in the world, the Pacific Ring of Fire.
