The Government of the Dominican Republic has established a deadline, set for this Sunday, August 16, for nine officials of the Cuban Embassy accredited in Santo Domingo to leave the national territory. The diplomatic measure affects a group of 21 people, including the officials, their spouses, and children.
To date, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) has not issued an official statement clarifying the reasons behind this provision. The lack of a public explanation has raised various questions regarding the nature of the decision, as it has not been confirmed whether it involves a declaration of “persona non grata,” an administrative adjustment, or a measure linked to national security issues.
Context of relations between the Dominican Republic and Cuba
Diplomatic ties between both nations date back to 1902. After various periods of interruption throughout the 20th century, relations were formally re-established in 1998, initiating a stage of collaboration in multiple sectors. Over the last few decades, both States have signed various legal instruments, among which the following stand out:
- The Migration Memorandum signed in 2014, designed to coordinate mobility issues between the two countries.
