Dominican Republic celebrates a historic feat: Caravan of champions travels through Santo Domingo after success in 2026 Games

Under a persistent rain that failed to dampen the enthusiasm, Dominican athletes took to the streets of Greater Santo Domingo this Sunday. With their medals around their necks, the athletes shared with the people the joy of having reached a historic milestone at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026.

The national delegation closed its participation with a total of 150 medals, an unprecedented milestone in the country’s sporting history. This record, consisting of 46 gold, 37 silver, and 67 bronze medals, far exceeds the mark of 131 medals achieved in San Salvador 2002, consolidating the best Dominican performance in this regional event.

A journey of national pride

The festive day, organized by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation under the leadership of Kelvin Cruz, began at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center. From there, the caravan traveled through various sectors of the National District, where hundreds of citizens gathered to cheer for their heroes, take photographs, and wave the tricolor flag.

The tour culminated at Eugenio María de Hostos Park, located on the Malecón, where an artistic activity was held to provide a grand finale to this historic celebration.

Stories behind success: Effort and perseverance

Beyond the statistics, the protagonists shared the experiences that made this success possible. Juan Miguel Arias, a key member of the softball team that won gold, reflected on his transition from baseball to this discipline: “Every effort was worth it,” expressed the athlete, who dedicated his triumph to his family and the fans who supported the team in every inning.

He who wins is he who enjoys it.

Esmery Martínez, 3×3 basketball champion

For her part, Esmery Martínez, a figure in women’s 3×3 basketball, highlighted the importance of competing at home and feeling the warmth of her people. Likewise, the Pigosi siblings starred in an unusual feat by winning 12 medals in water skiing, proving that athletic talent runs through the veins of this family from Boca Chica.

Mastery in diverse disciplines

  • Athletics: Liranyi Alonso shone with four gold medals, while the 4×400-meter mixed relay, led by Marileidy Paulino, also reached the top of the podium.
  • Karate: María Dimitrova reaffirmed her legend by winning her sixth consecutive gold medal in the kata category.

This record of 150 medals not only represents a triumph in the history books, but also symbolizes the maturity of Dominican sports. Following the success of Santo Domingo 2026, the commitment now shifts to development processes, with the goal of continuing to cultivate new talents who will keep raising the flag of the Dominican Republic high on international stages.
