Justice for Suma: Relatives demand the capture of the second individual involved in the fatal robbery in Cotuí
Almost a month after the tragic death of Jesús María Antonio Vargas Gómez, popularly known as “Suma,” his son Jesús Antonio Vargas Capellán has raised his voice to request that the Dominican authorities intensify their investigation efforts. The main objective is to locate and apprehend the second suspect involved in the crime that shocked the community of Cotuí.

The incident occurred on the night of August 12, when 67-year-old Vargas Gómez lost his life while attempting to prevent a robbery. According to reports, the man noticed that two individuals on a red CG-type motorcycle were attempting to steal a minor’s cell phone in the Vista del Valle sector, near Colmado Los Laureles.
While intervening to protect the young man, the victim was shot by the antisocial individuals, who managed to snatch a Redmi 13 device from him before fleeing the scene. The wounds received during the altercation caused his death shortly after.
Research status
Thanks to police intelligence efforts, it was possible to identify and capture Fernando José Cruz Mejía, alias “El Blate,” identified as the perpetrator of the fatal shots. However, the victim’s family emphasizes that the judicial process cannot be considered closed while one of the participants remains a fugitive.
