Citizen debate in Santiago: Iron fist or prevention against crime?
The recent wave of deaths, totaling at least 37 people killed in alleged exchanges of gunfire with National Police officers, has sparked an intense debate on the streets of Santiago. Public opinion is divided between those who support the actions of law enforcement and those who demand a comprehensive approach focused on prevention and social rehabilitation.
Divided opinions on police action
For a portion of the citizenry, the officers’ actions are a necessary response to individuals with significant criminal records. Franklin Cruz, one of those consulted, expressed his support for the law enforcement institution, arguing that police personnel are simply doing their duty in the face of individuals who, according to reports, have accumulated dozens of criminal records.
Imagine they are doing their job. It is said that they are people who have 30 tokens.
Franklin Cruz, citizen consultedOn the other hand, more critical sectors reject that physical elimination is presented as the definitive solution. Leo Mendoza, another citizen who offered his perspective, questioned whether the State is truly committed to the future of the youth. According to Mendoza, the fight against crime should prioritize the creation of institutions capable of reforming young people before their lives reach a point of no return.
The call to prevention and family values
The conversation has also moved to the realm of public policy and household responsibility. Blas Tavárez emphasized the urgency for the State to strengthen physical and moral training programs, aimed at protecting children and adolescents in vulnerable situations.
Likewise, figures such as Elva Fernández and Marina Rafaela Marte have focused on parenting. While Fernández maintains that values are sown at home, Marte, visibly moved, advocated for greater support and guidance for adolescents who, from an early age, show risk behaviors.
- Need to strengthen prevention and reading programs for youth.
- Importance of parental responsibility in the formation of values.
- Debate on the effectiveness and limits of police interventions.
A pending social challenge
The situation, which has been described by some consulted as a problem accumulated over years, raises profound questions about the root causes of crime. Alofoke Deportes continues to follow this issue, which today divides Dominican society between the demand for citizen security and the call for a system that provides real opportunities for reintegration for young people, thus preventing police operations from continuing to be the predominant news in the daily chronicles.
