Cuba sends message of solidarity to Indonesia after devastating earthquake

The Government of Cuba has formally expressed its condolences to the nation of Indonesia following the tragedy caused by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck the eastern region of the Asian country over the past weekend. Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, expressed through his official channels his administration’s sorrow for the loss of life and material damage caused by this natural phenomenon.

Seismic impact details

The seismic movement was recorded in the early hours of Saturday, with the epicenter located 62 kilometers northwest of the city of Ende, on the island of Flores. With a depth of just 10 kilometers, the impact was significant for the local population. Following the main event, nearly a thousand aftershocks were recorded, keeping the area’s inhabitants on alert.

Damage assessment in the region

According to the Local Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the preliminary figures following the catastrophe are concerning. The official count so far indicates:

  • 68 deceased people.
  • 213 citizens with injuries of varying severity.
  • Approximately 10,000 people displaced from their homes.

Indonesia is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area characterized by constant seismic and volcanic activity derived from the convergence of tectonic plates. It is estimated that around 7,000 earthquakes occur in this region annually, although the vast majority are usually of moderate intensity.
