COE issues green alert for Greater Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal due to weather conditions

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has established a green alert this Wednesday for San Cristóbal, Greater Santo Domingo, and the National District. This preventive measure responds to the risk of rising rivers, streams, and creeks, as well as the possibility of flash floods that could affect these areas.

The provision, made official at 1:00 p.m. this September 30, is based on technical reports from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet). According to the forecast, a significant increase in humidity and the influence of the east/northeast wind are expected, factors which, added to local effects, will lead to an increase in rainfall over the next few hours.

Forecast details and recommendations

Meteorological authorities anticipate moderate to heavy rains at times, which will be accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts. Given this outlook, the relief agency calls on the public to exercise caution and stay informed through official bulletins.

As part of the preventive measures, the COE has shared a series of recommendations to safeguard the integrity of the inhabitants in vulnerable areas:

  • Stay informed through official communication channels.
  • Review and update family emergency plans.
  • Prepare and verify the contents of emergency backpacks.
  • Avoid crossing rivers, streams, and ravines that have high water levels.

It is essential that the population in the provinces under alert take the necessary measures and avoid exposure in risk areas due to the possibility of urban and flash flooding.

Finally, the COE reminded the public that, in the event of any emergency situation, the 9-1-1 National Emergency and Security Response System is available 24 hours a day to provide immediate assistance.
