Christopher Melenciano makes history: Double world record for Dominican athletics
Dominican sprinter Christopher Melenciano has left an indelible mark on the 23rd Japanese Deaf Athletics Championships, solidifying his position as the fastest man in the world in his category after recording a historic performance on Japanese soil.
In a display of physical prowess and refined technique, Melenciano conquered the gold medal in the 200-meter dash, stopping the clock at an impressive 20.43 seconds. This mark not only earned him the top spot on the podium at the Heiwado HATO Stadium, but it shattered the previous world record of 20.60 seconds, which had been held by the Briton Eric Gregory since May 2022.
An unprecedented double
The Dominican’s feat is even more surprising when considering that it occurred just 24 hours after his success in the 100-meter dash. In that event, Melenciano recorded 10.17 seconds, surpassing the historic mark of 10.21 seconds that American Wendell Gaskin Jr. had held since 1996.
With these results, Christopher Melenciano stands as the absolute holder of the world records in the premier sprint events, the 100 and 200 meters, within deaf athletics, elevating the prestige of Dominican sports on a global scale.
Rising trajectory
The Dominican athlete continues to demonstrate his high competitive level, adding this achievement to his already outstanding career. Recently, Melenciano was a fundamental part of the national team at the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, where he had an outstanding participation as part of the 4×400-meter mixed relay team alongside figures of the stature of Marileidy Paulino, Anabel Medina, and Erick Sánchez.
This historic double in Japan marks a turning point in Melenciano’s career, who is emerging as one of the most dominant figures in international sprinting, carrying the Dominican flag to the top of the world podium.
