Asafa Powell and the commitment to equity mark the day at Panam Sports Week

The city of Lima became the epicenter of continental sport during the second day of the Panam Sports Week. The event featured the stellar presence of legendary Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, who was recognized for his historic career, highlighting his former world record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 9.74 seconds.

Boosting female leadership in sports

One of the most significant moments on the agenda was the forum dedicated to women in sports. In this space, Kristy Coventry, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), emphasized that gender equality is not a challenge exclusive to women, but a collective responsibility that requires the commitment of the entire sports ecosystem.

No one within this movement can forge this future alone. Women’s equality is not just a women’s issue, it is a shared responsibility, and that is why it truly needs all of us. Together, let us continue to build the world of sport in which every woman and girl can dream without limits and make their dreams a reality.

The leader stressed that, although notable progress has been made, there are still gaps to close, especially in female representation in leadership roles, coaching, and in the media visibility of athletes. For his part, the president of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic, reaffirmed that the creation of these spaces responds to the capacity and talent of individuals, beyond any gender distinction.

Participation of prominent figures

The discussion panel featured the participation of high-profile figures, including the former President of Costa Rica and IOC member, Laura Chinchilla, alongside prominent athletes such as Canadian rower Jane Thornton, Brazilian pentathlete Yane Marques, and Peruvian volleyball player Cecilia Tait. The central themes revolved around empowerment, protection policies, and strategies to boost women’s sports in the region.

Panam Sports Week Schedule in Lima

• Activities: The event takes place from August 23 to 28, bringing together executives from the 41 national Olympic committees.
• Tour: Attendees will visit the facilities that will host the Lima 2027 Pan American Games.
• Closing: The general assembly on August 27 and 28 will define the host city for the 2029 Junior Pan American Games.

Institutional meeting

Within the framework of this visit, the President of Peru held a meeting with the highest authority of the IOC at the Government Palace. This approach reaffirms the confidence of international organizations in Peru’s logistical capacity to organize major sporting events, consolidating the country as a regional benchmark and highlighting sport as a vital tool for social transformation and youth development.
