Calamar Case: Trial on the merits continues after rejection of dismissal requests
The Third Collegiate Court of the National District resumes the trial on the merits of the so-called Calamar case this Wednesday. The hearing, scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the Ciudad Nueva Palace of Justice, marks the continuation of the judicial process involving former Minister of Finance, Donald Guerrero, and other former officials accused of various administrative irregularities.
The court, which had paused the hearing of the case due to health complications of one of the defendants, confirmed that the sessions will be held regularly on Mondays and Wednesdays, in an extended schedule from 9:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the afternoon.
Judicial decision on criminal action
Prior to the resumption, the judicial body resolved the requests submitted by the defense counsel, which sought the dismissal of the criminal action on the grounds that the proceedings had exceeded the established legal deadlines. However, the judges dismissed these arguments.
The court determined that the maximum duration of the proceedings has not been exceeded, arguing that the complexity of the file, the volume of defendants, and the history of procedural actions justify the continuation of the case.
Context of the accusations
The Public Prosecutor’s Office bases its accusation on the so-called Operation Squid, a file that details alleged irregularities in the management of public funds during the previous administration. Among the key points to be addressed in this stage of the process are:
- The analysis of the evidence presented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
- The defense of the accused against the charges of alleged corruption.
- The evaluation of the criminal liability of those involved in the indicated operations.
With this resolution, the Calamar case continues its legal course, allowing the court to delve into the merits of the file to determine the criminal responsibilities of each of the defendants sent to trial.
