“The Rematch”: Abinader’s baseball proposal to strengthen ties with Venezuela
In a bilateral meeting marked by cordiality, the President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, launched a sports proposal that seeks to strengthen cultural ties between his nation and Venezuela. During his participation in the 2026 World Food Forum, held in Rome, the Dominican leader suggested holding a series of three baseball games between both countries, pleasantly dubbed “The Rematch.”
This initiative emerged as a gesture of rapprochement during the meeting held with the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, at the FAO headquarters. Both leaders agreed that baseball is not only a shared passion, but a common language that can serve as a bridge to consolidate the union between the two peoples.
Beyond the diamond: Diplomatic and commercial agenda
The dialogue between Abinader and Rodríguez was not limited to the sports sphere, but covered key points for the normalization of diplomatic and commercial relations between Santo Domingo and Caracas. Among the most highlighted aspects are:
- Consular normalization: The reopening of the Dominican consulate in Venezuela was confirmed as of October 1st, while Venezuela announced the upcoming appointment of a consul in Dominican territory.
- Energy cooperation: Agreements are being explored for the direct purchase of petroleum derivatives, including AC30 fuel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), through a roadmap between Refidomsa and PDVSA.
- Bilateral solidarity: The Venezuelan delegation expressed its gratitude for the humanitarian support provided by the Dominican Republic, especially for the deployment of rescue workers and medical personnel following the recent earthquake that affected Venezuela.
The “Rematch” proposal symbolizes the desire of both nations to leave behind the diplomatic tensions recorded after the July 2024 elections, betting on a new stage of collaboration and mutual understanding.
Despite the enthusiasm generated by the idea of this baseball matchup, the authorities have not yet defined dates, venues, or formal agreements for its execution. However, the meeting marks a significant step forward in regional diplomacy, prioritizing dialogue and common interests in a context of recovering bilateral relations.
