Dominican government presents ambitious plan to transform national road infrastructure and traffic
President Luis Abinader led the second installment of The Weekly Agenda, a space dedicated to detailing progress and strategic planning in infrastructure. Accompanied by the main officials of the sector, the president presented a series of projects designed to optimize road connectivity, streamline traffic in Greater Santo Domingo, and raise safety levels on roads throughout the country.
Solutions for Greater Santo Domingo
The administration’s main focus is on decongesting the capital’s entry and exit points. Among the highlighted actions is the construction of new overpasses on the Duarte Highway, a key measure to eliminate traffic lights and allow uninterrupted vehicular flow toward the north of the country. Likewise, the tender for the expansion of the Sánchez highway was announced, specifically for the section connecting the Haina toll booth with the beltway, creating a vital alternative route for traffic coming from the South and the Cibao region.
In the urban area, critical improvements are being carried out on the connectivity of the Republic of Colombia Avenue with Jacobo Majluta, in addition to a new underpass near the cable car terminal towards La Victoria. One of the most relevant announcements is the replacement of the current floating bridge with a modern bascule bridge over the Ozama River, designed to minimize traffic interruptions during the passage of vessels.
The central objective of these interventions is to transform national mobility through planning that responds directly to the needs of citizens, improving both transport efficiency and road safety.

The Duarte Highway, the nation’s main artery, continues under an intensive modernization process. Work is focused on expanding bridges to six lanes, enabling new U-turns, and closing dangerous intersections, especially in the sections between Santo Domingo-Villa Altagracia and the route from Santiago airport to Loma Miranda.
Additionally, the government is currently executing five major beltway projects nationwide:
- Navarrete Bypass: vital for mobility in the Northwest Line, scheduled for delivery this year.
- Los Alcarrizos Bypass.
- Moca Bypass.
- San Francisco de Macorís Bypass.
- La Otra Banda Bypass: aimed at streamlining traffic to the tourist hubs of Bávaro and Punta Cana.
With these initiatives, the State seeks to consolidate an efficient road network that boosts economic development and facilitates the movement of Dominicans throughout the entire national territory.
