5.1 magnitude earthquake shakes central Colombia with no major damage reported
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake shook Colombian territory during the morning of this Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The seismic event, which had its epicenter in the Los Santos area, Santander, was felt in multiple cities across the country, causing moments of tension among the population, although authorities confirmed a positive outcome regarding the physical safety of the citizens.
The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (Ungrd) reported that, following the seismic movement recorded at 11:45 a.m., no structural damage or human casualties were reported. Immediately, the National Crisis Room was activated to coordinate with local authorities and monitor the state of infrastructure in the regions closest to the epicenter.

Technical details and scope of the earthquake
The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) specified that the earthquake had a depth of 149 kilometers and originated in the Bucaramanga seismic nest, an area of high tectonic activity where nearly 50% of the country’s daily earthquakes are concentrated. This geographical peculiarity allowed the tremor to be clearly felt in Bogotá, Medellín, Bucaramanga, Cúcuta, Manizales, and Ibagué.

In Bogotá, the movement was described by residents as a short but intense event, especially in high-rise buildings. No relation to previous seismic events
Given the natural concern of the citizenry, the Colombian Geological Service clarified that this event has no relation to the recent and devastating earthquake that occurred on August 10 in San José del Palmar, Chocó. According to experts, both phenomena respond to completely independent geological dynamics and tectonic origins.
The entity reiterated the call for calm and reminded the population that, due to the unpredictable nature of earthquakes, it is essential to stay informed through official channels and avoid the spread of fake news that could cause unnecessary panic.
