Magnitude 4 earthquake reported in Guayas province, Ecuador
A magnitude 4 earthquake shook the coastal province of Guayas this Wednesday, located in the southwestern region of Ecuador. So far, authorities have not reported any fatalities or significant material damage resulting from the seismic event.
According to the technical data provided by the Geophysical Institute, the natural phenomenon was recorded at 02:33 local time (07:33 GMT). The epicenter was located 28.34 kilometers from the town of Velasco Ibarra, a key geographical point that serves as a link between the provinces of Guayas, Los Ríos, and Manabí, situated at a depth of 70 kilometers.
Recent seismic activity in the region
This event adds to a series of telluric movements that have affected the area in recent days, keeping the population on alert. During Tuesday, a 4.3 magnitude earthquake was reported off the coast of Manabí, while another of 3.4 magnitude occurred on Monday in the Guayas province.
Ecuador in the Ring of Fire
Ecuador’s geographical location places it directly on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This region, characterized by its horseshoe shape, concentrates the most important subduction zones on the planet, which makes this territory a point of constant seismic and volcanic activity.
The scope of the Ring of Fire is extensive and encompasses various nations, including:
- Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru.
- Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
- El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico.
- United States and Canada.
The high seismicity in the Ecuadorian territory is a direct consequence of its position in the Ring of Fire, an area where the interaction of tectonic plates generates frequent events of this nature.
