Theft of sports equipment in Bayaguana affects incentives for athletes
A regrettable criminal incident shook the municipality of Bayaguana, in the Monte Plata province, after the theft of 35 55-inch televisions from the local Sports Complex was confirmed. The equipment was intended to be awarded as incentives to the athletes, coaches, and officials who successfully represented the municipality in the recently concluded XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026.
According to reports, the wrongdoers took advantage of the early morning hours to breach one of the complex’s windows, also forcing several doors before fleeing after climbing the perimeter fence of the premises.
Ongoing research
Isaac Ogando, president of the Bayaguana Sports Union, confirmed that the case is already under investigation by the National Police. Agents from the Central Investigation Directorate (Dicrim) are collecting evidence at the scene and analyzing possible security camera footage from neighboring homes to identify those responsible.
The organizers remain hopeful that the authorities will be able to identify and apprehend those responsible in order to subsequently complete the delivery of the televisions to the athletes, coaches, and officials who were recognized for their participation in Santo Domingo 2026.
Recognition despite adversity
Despite the setback, the recognition event for the athletes was carried out normally. The ceremony, organized by Juan Hubieres, president of Fenatrano and the Rebel Movement, together with Isaac Ogando, featured a lunch and musical entertainment by Robertico and his Nuevo Son. To mitigate the absence of the stolen televisions, a mock delivery was performed using five additional units that were being kept in a private residence.
Sports pride of Bayaguana
The municipality of Bayaguana was the key piece in the medal count for the province of Monte Plata during the 2026 Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games, achieving an impressive haul of 19 medals: two gold, five silver, and 12 bronze.

Councilman Caonabo Hubieres expressed his concern regarding the event, noting that this robbery adds to a series of criminal incidents that have affected the tranquility of the Bayaguana community in recent months.
