Dominican education begins 2026-2027 school year with a focus on essential learning

The Dominican educational system officially began the 2026-2027 school year, with a central event that marked the return to classrooms of more than two million students throughout the national territory. The ceremony, which was attended by President Luis Abinader and the Minister of Education, Luis Miguel De Camps, served as a platform to define the priority goals for the current academic period.

Priority: reading and writing

Licinio Almonte de la Cruz, director of the Espejo La Milagrosa Primary School, the event’s host center, highlighted that the main objective for this year is to consolidate the students’ basic competencies. The educator emphasized the importance of ensuring that every child develops solid literacy skills.

That children who do not know how to read learn to read and write, and those who already know, reinforce them. That is our goal at this center.

Almonte de la Cruz thanked the educational community and regional authorities for their support, describing the start of classes as a collective success resulting from the joint effort between teachers, families, and the Ministry of Education.

For his part, President Luis Abinader urged students to maintain a proactive attitude, inviting them to question, participate, and, above all, not to fear failure as part of the learning process. The president stressed that educational work is a shared responsibility, making a direct call to families to get actively involved in their children’s academic development.
